ROAD
TO CALIFORNIA Quiltmakers
have been creating scrap quilts for over a hundred years. They can
be made from leftovers from other sewing and quilting projects or
produced from purchased fabric. The best way of achieving a good
selection of purchased fabric for a scrap quilt is to buy fat quarters.
Fat quarters are particularly useful if you want a co-ordinatcd
scrap look, restricting the number of colours but increasing the
range of prints to be included in the quilt. Use a variety of large,
medium and small prints, as well as checks, stripes and spots. STARTS
IN THE SASHING Star
patterns are always popular and using the simple piecing technique
described here will save you having to work with triangles. The
method of using connector squares instead of triangles was developed
by Mary Ellen Hopkins, a well-known American teacher and designer.
Stars in the Sashing gives you the opportunity of featuring a favourite
fabric in the large squares - a large-scale or dramatic print here
contrasts well with solid or almost solid colours for the background
and stars. TRUE
LOVER'S KNOT True
Lover's Knot is traditionally made featuring blue or red fabric
with a cream or white background, but it could be made in any
two-colour combination. It works well if made from a variety of
fabrics in a single colour against a background of light seeded
homespun or good quality calico. A very simple block for beginners
to try, it is made only from squares and rectangles. WINDSOR
SETTLER'S COTTAGE Windsor
Settler's Cottage The delightful slab cottages built by the first
settlers in the Hawkesbury District of New South Wales are represented
in this quilt block designed by Greg Hansell, a well-known local
artist, who has painted many of these early cottages. The colours
used to make the sky, grass, path, chimney, windows and doors
have been repeated in each block. The roofs and walls are made
from a variety of fabrics to add interest to the quilt.
