IRISH
CHAIN
While
this quilt looks like a traditional Single Irish Chain pattern,
it is in fact based on the block known as Puss in the Corner. The
design is made from two blocks using simple squares and rectangles.
Traditionally Irish Chain quilts are made in two colours, but the
design would also look attractive if the centre square incorporated
a third colour using a large print. The plain alternate block is
ideal for the person who loves quilting.

JACOBS
LADDER
Jacob's
ladder is a very old pattern and is also sometimes called the World's
Fair Block. It is a design that can be made in a restricted range
of colours, as we have done here, or it can he made as a multi-coloured
scrap quilt. Because the colours can be changed in so many ways
it suits either a boy's or girl's room. The quilt is made from one
simple block of triangles and squares.

LOG
CABIN
Traditionally
the centre square of the Log Cabin block was red, to represent
the hearth or fireplace in the cabin. Today we think more about
co-ordinating the colours to suit our decor and featuring special
fabrics in the centre of each block. There are many ways of laying
out log Cabin quilts: the design chosen here is called Barn Raising.

OHIO
STAR
OhioStar
Both boys and girls love stars, and so did quilt makers one hundred
years ago. The quilt in the photograph has been made from very
traditional fabrics and colours, so it looks like a nineteenth-century
quilt, but this design lends itself to many different colour choices.
Brights and pastels, as well as the many modern designs available
in quilt fabrics today, would suit an Ohio Star quilt.
