COUNTRY PIECED BASKET

Quiltmakers have created many kinds of basket patterns over the years. Some are elaborate and include applique elements, but the baskets in this quilt are made using simple sewing techniques: the triangles are sewn together to make squares, and then the squares are sewn together in rows. The blocks are turned on point when they are laid out, and the rows of the quilt are sewn together diagonally - we include a construction diagram to make this absolutely straight forward.

FLYING GEESE

A popular quilt for both adults and children, Flying Geese has always been a favourite because it can be made in so many different ways. It can be made to look modern by using contemporary or bright colours or give it a traditional look by using country colours checks, stripes and print fabrics. This single bed quilt is rotary cut, machine pieced and quilted. Making the large geese this way is great way for beginners to learn template free piecing.

GRAN'S VERANDAH

My grandmother lived in a very old house that had a beautifully tiled verandah. When I was a child I loved to play on the verandah, and the tiles and the pattern fascinated me. Here I have translated the pattern on Gran's verandah into a patchwork quilt. Although it looks like a complex design, it is made from three very simple blocks. Gran's Verandah was made in the new flannel fabrics designed especially for patchworkers - they make particularly cosy quilts.

HEIRLOOM NINE PATCH

Ninepatch blocks are versatile and so easy to make - nothing is simpler than sewing squares. This quilt is ideal for beginners. The ninepatch blocks are made from fat quarters, which are readily available from most quilt shops. The rich colours, along with the choice of prints, checks and stripes, give this quilt a vintage nineteenth century look.
