Quilts
as we know them, have been made in Australia since the arrival of
the First Fleet. The surge of popularity we are experiencing today,
began about twenty years ago, partly under the influence of the
resurgence of quilt making in the USA at the time of their Bicentenary.
The
designs and the techniques of quilt making have been passed from
one generation to another, from friend to a friend or a teacher
to a student. In the old days, someone would share a pattern and
show how to sew the pieces together. When the top was complete,
friends would get together and baste the patchwork to its batting
and backing, ready for the final step of quilting.
Some
quilts were hand quilted with tiny stitches worked through all three
layers: others were joined with the much quicker method of tying,
holding the layers together with knots of thread: and some were
simply backed, with neither batting nor quilting. Quilt making today
has changed greatly: books and magazines constantly produce new
designs, and new techniques for construction have been introduced.
